Explore the journey of Swanage Skatepark, from grassroots DIY beginnings to our current progress.
2001 - 200X
Lorna Haines is the founder of Y Axis Skate Club to provide skateboarding lessons and equipment for young people in Swanage. In 2002 the DIY wooden ramps in the skatepark were deemed unsafe and removed by Swanage Town Council forcing Lorna to switch her fundraising efforts to focus on providing replacement ramps. New Legal Street Art Wall arrives beside Swanage Skatepark
2015 - 2022
Lorna Successfully raises £20k as Y Axis Skate Club for a new skatelite half-pipe to replace an old ramp. The new halfpipe was installed by Rob Steele from Radii Ramps in 2022.
2023

A large portion of ramps are deemed unsafe and removed by Swanage Town Council who then resurfaced the empty space park and pledged £15k towards new ramps.

Local skatepark users come together to form Swanage Skatepark Community Project with Lorna Haines as Chairperson.

We run a successful public user consultation with 170 survey responses to find out what our community wants from Swanage Skatepark

We join Swanage and Purbeck Development Trust to become a registered charity

Based on the user consultation, we create a design brief which is shared with park builders to help us set a fundraising target for the project - £200k
2024

SSCP is awarded a £5k grant from #Willdoes to cover the cost of a Community Day at Swanage Skatepark in June 2024 and to cover general operating costs for the year.

SSCP run a successful community crowdfunding campaign securing £6k in match funding from Sport England. The Crowdfunder contributes £20k towards our fundraising target.

SSCP is awarded a £10k grant for new ramps from The Valentine Charitable Trust.

SSCP is awarded grants of £500 from Swanage Town Council and £1,497 from Dorset Council to cover the cost of another event at Swanage Skatepark in October 2024.
